How do I wash my Real Nappies?

Washing Real Nappies is often one of the first concerns that people have when thinking about the practicalities of using Real Nappies....how will I deal with the dirty nappies? how much extra washing will it mean? won't the nappy pail be really smelly?

However, washing and caring for your real nappies is a lot easier than it may first seem.

  • The most recommended method is dry pailing, where the nappies (minus any poo), wraps, liners, boosters and washable wipes are all stored in the bucket until it's time to wash them.
  • The nappies etc are then transferred to the washing machine and can be washed at 40C - 60C. (For young or poorly babies, it is recommended to wash at 60C).
  • Generally you will only need half your usual amount of detergent.
  • You will not need any fabric softener as this coats the fibres of the nappy, making it less absorbent)
  • When it comes to drying, line drying is obviously preferable to the tumble dryer. It's free, requires no energy and the sun is the best way to naturally bleach out any stains your nappies may have.
  • If you do use the tumble dryer, it is best to use it on a low setting and ensure check each nappy first to ensure it's suitable - e.g. bamboo nappies can 'cook' on a hot setting and cause the pile to flatten, making the nappy less soft and less effective.

Most real nappies will need washing 3-4 times before use, to remove any coating used on the fabric as this will reduce it's absorbency. It is not necessary to dry the nappies in between each of these pre-washes. Some real nappies will not reach their full absorbency until they have been washed 8-10 times.
